How To: Restore & Protect Leather Furniture from Sun Damage
The sun can be your leather furniture's worst enemy! With the intense UV rays in NZ, shielding your leather from fading, drying out, and cracking is extra important.
Whether you want to prevent damage or bring sun-tired leather back to life, the proper care makes all the difference.
Prevent Sun Damage
Sun exposure zaps the colour and moisture from leather over time, but a little TLC can keep it looking fresh. Here's how:
-
Keep it out of direct sunlight - if possible, position your leather furniture away from windows or use blinds to cut down on UV & sun exposure
- Condition regularly- a high-quality leather balm keeps leather hydrated, preventing cracks and stiffness
- Use UV protectant - a monthly light spray of nano protector helps to defend against fading and sun damage
- Cover up when needed - if your sofa or chair sits in a sunny spot, throw on a light cover during peak sunlight hours
How to restore sun-damaged leather
If the sun has already left its mark on your leather furniture, don't fret; with the right care steps you can bring it back to life.
-
Clean the leather
Start with Avel Leather Cleaning Soap to lift dirt, oil, and residue. This preps the leather for conditioning and recolouring.
-
Rehydrate
If the leather feels dry, a nourishing Leather Balm will help restore softness and flexibility
-
Restore fading
Minor - a matching shade of Avel Leather Renovating Balm will help to refresh the colour
Light to medium - use a slightly darker shade of Avel Leather Renovating Balm to restore and provide a uniform colouring all over
Severe - apply Leather Balm to hydrate the leather, then use a Leather Penetrating Dye for full colour restoration
Tedd's Tip: For a slight refresh, a tinted Avel Leather Renovating Balm does double duty - nourishes and restores colour
-
Seal and Protect
Once your leather looks brand new again, help protect it from future damage using the Avel Leather Preservation Wax
