How to Care for Birkenstock Sandals
Birkenstocks are a Kiwi summer essential - comfy, durable and effortlessly stylish!
But a little TLC is a must if you want them to go the distance. Proper care keeps them looking sharp and supportive, preventing the dreaded dried-out cork situation. With the right routine and products, you can enjoy your Birks for many summers to come.
The Birkenstock Care Kit has everything you need to keep your sandals in top shape.
Here's how to use it:
1. Cleaning The Uppers
-
Smooth Leather – Apply the Multi Cleaner to the uppers and work it in gently with the synthetic brush side of the Suede Combi Brush.
-
Suede & Nubuck – Start by brushing off any loose dirt. Then, apply the Multi Cleaner and work it in using circular motions. Once dry, restore the nap with long, gentle strokes.
2. Protecting The Cork Footbed
Cork can dry out over time, leading to cracks, so regular maintenance goes a long way.
-
Seal the cork – Apply a thin layer of Cork Renew around the cork perimeter. It goes on white but dries clear. Let it dry for about an hour, then apply a second coat for extra protection.
3. Keeping The Uppers Protected
-
No matter the material, a quick spritz of WaterProtector Spray (included in the kit) helps protect against moisture, dirt, and stains—plus, it adds an extra layer of defense for the cork.
4. General Care Tips
-
Avoid Water Exposure – EVA Birkenstocks are water-friendly, but the classic cork-footbed styles? Not so much. Let them air dry naturally if they get wet—no direct heat!
-
Cleaning The Footbed – Over time, dirt builds up and can cause discolouration.
A quick fix? Lightly sand the footbed with 120-grit sandpaper. -
Repairs & Resoling – Even with top-tier care, soles wear down, and cork needs attention. Don’t ditch your Birks—get them resoled! Need help finding a Birkenstock repairer? Give us a shout.
A little care now saves you from replacing your favourite sandals too soon!
Show your Birkenstocks some love, and they'll keep you stepping in style for years to come.
